Wii U Is Unlikely To Hit Target Even As Sales Double | Pokemon Alpha Sapphire | Pokemon Omega Ruby | Tomodachi Life | Super Smash Bros. for Wii u | Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

Nintendo’s Q2 2015 forecast shows mixed results as Wii U sales double but 3DS sales are halved.

After months of struggling, there is finally some good news for Nintendo’s Wii U console.

Between July 1 and September 30 of this year, the Wii U sold 610,000 units. That’s more than double what the current gen console managed in the same period in 2013. That brings the platform’s life-to-date sales to 7.29 million in total. What makes these figure even better is that the Wii U managed this with only one major release, Hyrule Warriors

However, despite this increase the console is still predicted to miss Nintendo’s expectations of 3.6 million sales this financial year. Over the past 6 months the Japanese company has only sold 1.12 million units. Nintendo will be hoping that their Amibo collection and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game will have a huge impact on Wii U sales this holiday season.

Figures for the 3DS were even worse as the handheld only sold 1.27 million units this quarter, down from 2.49 million sales in the same period last year. That’s a 50% decrease Year-on-Year, despite the success of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Tomodachi Life which have sold 3.22 million and 3.12 million worldwide. The Nintendo 3DS has sold over 45 million units altogether but it looks like it has reached saturation point. Unless the handheld is given a huge boost by the release Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, as well as by the Japanese and Australian launch of the New 3DS, it looks like the platform will also miss Nintendo’s target of 12 million sales this fiscal year.

Overall, Nintendo has made a net profit of ¥14.3 billion ($131.5 million) over the past 6 months, mostly thanks to a positive exchange rate. Still, that’s a lot better than the ¥0.6 billion profit made in the first half of last fiscal year.

Are you planning on picking up a 3DS or Wii U this holiday season? If not, why not? Let us know in the comments below.

Apple seeds third Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3 beta and iOS 6.1 beta 4

Apple seeds third Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3 beta and iOS 6.1 beta 4

Apple has seeded the third beta of Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3 to developers, as well as a new beta of iOS 6.1, Xcode 4.6 and Apple TV software.

The Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3 beta was seeded on Tuesday, with build number 12D43. It has no known issues or new features, but Apple has asked developers to focus their testing on AirPlay, AirPort, Game Center, Graphics Drivers and Safari, MacRumors reports.

The first beta of Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3 was seeded in November, followed by a second beta ten days later on 6 December.

Earlier this week, Apple also released the iOS 6.1 beta 4 for developers as an over-the-air update, labelled as build 10B5126b. The new version contains bug fixes and improvements, reports Apple Insider. It arrives two weeks after the third beta was seeded to developers.

Alongside iOS 6.1 beta 4, Apple seeded Xcode 4.6 Preview and Apple TV software update beta 3.

These beta updates have been made available to developers as the public have been given an iOS 6.0.2 update for iPhone and iPad mini that is said to fix a WiFi bug.

Also this week, Apple posted updates to the WiFi and EFI firmware for almost all of the Macs it released in 2012.

Samsung readies world’s most pixel-packed laptop display

Samsung readies world’s most pixel-packed laptop display

Retina who? Not to be outdone on the display front, Samsung is showing off a 13.3-inch LCD notebook panel with a whopping 3200-by-1800 resolution screen.

Samsung Display will showcase the high-resolution screen during Display Week 2013 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Samsung’s panel has a pixel density of 276 pixels per inch. If Samsung or other PC makers bring this display to market, it would easily outshine Apple’s MacBook Pro with Retina Display (227 ppi), Toshiba’s Kirabook (221 ppi), and Google’s Chromebook Pixel (239 ppi).

But that’s a big “if” in the near term, considering that Samsung hasn’t actually announced any products that use the display. Last August, the company showed off a prototype 13.3-inch laptop with a 2560-by-1440 resolution panel (pictured above), but that hasn’t come to market yet, either.

High-resolution laptops have their drawbacks. Processing power must be greater than laptops with lower-resolution screens, which drives up the base price. Larger batteries are also necessary to power all those pixels, resulting in thicker and heavier designs.

What’s more, it’ll be a while before software fully takes advantage of these high-resolution screens. Many desktop applications and Websites aren’t designed with Retina-like resolutions in mind, so users can end up with tiny buttons and images, or ones that become blurry or fuzzy due to unnatural stretching.

Over time, the hardware obstacles will be easier for PC makers to overcome. (Samsung, for that matter, says its upcoming crop of high-resolution displays offer a 30 percent power savings over existing LCD panels.) And as more laptops with pixel densities above 200 ppi hit the market, software will likely become more accommodating. With a major display maker like Samsung entering the ring, the death of the pixel is getting ever closer.

MP Tom Watson caught out by intern’s Twitter hijack

MP Tom Watson caught out by intern’s Twitter hijack

Labour MP Tom Watson was the trending topic Thursday afternoon on Twitter, after having had his account tom_watson hijacked by a parliamentary intern while he was away from his desk in a meeting.

The intern in question, believed to be a 21-year-old female, tweeted a message at 12.30pm GMT from Watson’s account, saying: “I should log out of my twitter so that my intern doesn’t twit-rape me…”

Fifteen minutes later, after the post was re-tweeted and replied to numerous people following the MP, she realised her “terrible mistake”, and tweeted a further message: “My boss is in a meeting, i’ve made a terrible mistake, im very sorry everyone, it wasn’t meant to be offensive! logging him off now! sorry!”

The politician logged onto his Twitter account twenty minutes later to apologise for the tweet, stating that his intern was “very sorry”, had learned a lesson and that he would “deal with the matter offline”.

The incident has attracted comments from hundreds of users in the last three hours, all trending on the hashtag topic #SaveTheIntern.

The Daily Telegraph reported that in response to some of these tweets, Watson has said that the intern will not be sacked, and that she is on a year-long placement.

The practice of playing a prank on someone by changing their status to something potentially embarrassing or amusing on social networks like Facebook or Twitter is a rising one amongst young adult users, that is often known as “frape” (on Facebook) or “twit-rape”.

Twitter user welsh_gas_doc explained that some users do not realise the consequences of pranks on social networks.

“It’s easy to write something on Twitter that seems a good idea at the time, but then backfires and causes no end of stress,” he said.

The unfortunate intern has inadvertently restarted discussions on the management of online reputations, with Twitter users wondering whether Labour have proper policies about social media.

“Interns fault? Maybe not. Can we trust MPs to govern when they can’t manage their own security at basic level? “ is one such as a comment from user Jonathan Guttridge (JGuttridge).

Other users are wondering if this is an elaborate publicity stunt instead of a foolish mistake. Twitter user Katie Jackson (KittyStory) noted that Tom Watson has garnered over 700 new followers in three hours and that the intern is a “social media whizzard”.

While some users joined the trending topic in support of the intern, worrying that she might be fired, yet others were full of criticism of her actions and concerned about the phrase “rape” being used as a joke.

“Do not #savetheintern! Anybody over 8 would realise that false tweeting under your employer’s name is really stupid as you will get caught,” said Twitter user Alexandra Phillips (Speechwright).

Users also used the opportunity to bring up the controversial topic of how some MPs still use unpaid parliamentary interns and to campaign for them to be paid, trending an additional topic, #paytheintern.

iMac maker reports sales dip

iMac maker reports sales dip

Apple’s Taiwan-based LCD iMac manufacturer, Quanta, reported reduced sales in July, but predicts better results during the rest of the year.

A DigiTimes report claims Quantra sales fell 12.3 per cent in July – but were still up 3.8 per cent from July 2001. Sales were up 19.4 per cent for the first seven months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Quanta is reported as saying that the decline is consistent with historical patterns, as manufacturers slow shipments in July to introduce new products.

Analysts blame the weak July results on Apple stopping 15-inch iMac shipments to prepare the ground for an updated 17-inch model. They expect sales to improve this month, as the new model ships.

Diablo III Crosses the 15 Million Mark | Diablo III | Diablo 3

Diablo III Crosses the 15 Million Mark | Diablo III | Diablo 3

If you’ve played and enjoyed Diablo III, you’re hardly the only one.

It’s a legendary name in the world of video games.

Therefore, it’s fitting that the latest entry has sold so well. Activision Blizzard has announced that Diablo III has moved 15 million copies across all platforms. The game originally launched for PC in May 2012, and then came to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013. A PS4 version is reportedly in the works, but we haven’t heard anything about an Xbox One installment. We have to assume it’s coming, though.

The highly anticipated expansion pack, Reaper of Souls, is slated to hit the PC and Mac on March 25. This has also been confirmed for PS4 though again, there’s no word on PS3 or Xbox 360/Xbox One iterations.

Diablo III received rave reviews when it came out (with a few exceptions), and that undoubtedly helped spur sales. However, let’s face it–this franchise can sell on its name alone, regardless of critical reception. This 15 million isn’t so much about the quality, but about the iconic name.

A worthy experience on a console?

Those who’ve played it on the PS3 and 360 say it is, but PC fanatics remain unconvinced. At the very least, the developers say they’ve worked very hard to optimize the game for the PS4, so maybe that’s where it will shine brightest. That’s the version I intend to play, at any rate. I really don’t have a gaming-quality PC and I really don’t want one, either.
