Masahiro Sakurai Breaks Down Clones and Balance in Super Smash Bros. | Super Smash Bros. Brawl | Super Smash Bros. Melee | Super Smash Bros. for Wii u | Super Smash Bros. for 3DS | Super Smash Bros.

Masahiro Sakurai Breaks Down Clones and Balance in Super Smash Bros. | Super Smash Bros. Brawl | Super Smash Bros. Melee | Super Smash Bros. for Wii u | Super Smash Bros. for 3DS | Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. 4 creator Masahiro Sakurai took time out to explain the differences between the game’s clone characters and the alternative costumes of other characters.

New moveset clones and costumes abound in the Super Smash Bros. 4 universe, and creator Masahiro Sakurai sought to clarify the differences between the two.

Sakurai admitted that the Smash Bros. series wouldn’t have nearly as much value among its fanbase if all of the characters for every roster were similar. As such, he emphasized the importance of making sure that each character in the roster is unique and playable enough for inclusion.

To illustrate this point, Sakurai made examples of Fire Emblem characters Marth and Lucina, both of whom are included in the Super Smash Bros. title for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. He explained that there were “reasons” for the inclusion of each one, despite the appearance of redundancy.

“Each was originally a color variation, but during development, they were given balanced characteristics. Since their functionality had differences, forms were separated from each other.”

Lucina was the first of the clones to be split-off from her muse, since the creative team opted to make Marth’s combat moves more standard. As a result, he was made “easy to handle for novice players.”

Any differences between her and Marth are made very slight, such as their sizes and the attack power distributed through their sword strokes; however, they were slight enough to have Lucina in her own spot on the roster, becoming a separate character entirely. Super Smash Bros. Melee saw this same occurrence with Roy in Lucina’s place, while Ike replaced Roy in Brawl.

Other such clone pairs include Doctor Mario and Dark Pit, who each take after Mario and Pit, respectively.

Unlike the clones’ difference in fighting attributes, alternative costumes such as the male Wii Fit Trainer or the Koopalings — versus the canonically female Wii Fit Trainer and Bowser Jr. — are confirmed to remain unchanged between costumes. In Bowser Jr.’s case, he would simply be replaced with whichever of the Koopalings the player chooses, and the fight is on.

With Sakurai’s insight on how the characters were designed and made to function, players should find experimenting with different fighters )and reuniting with old ones) in this new Smash installment all the more enjoyable and — dare we say — smashing. SSB4 is in stores now.

DJ hardware ships

DJ hardware ships

Native Instruments is now shipping hardware to let DJs pitch, cue, spin and needle drop onto digital-music mixes.

The hardware, Final Scratch 1.1 from Stanton Magnetics, uses time-code technology encoded on vinyl records to manipulate digital music, and is designed to work with standard DJ mixers, two turntables and digital DJ application, Traktor.

Traktor allows DJs to mix CDs, MP3s, WAV and AIFF files. Native Instruments is now shipping a version of the software equipped to work with Final Scratch.

The digital DJ solution lets users listen and cue tracks, run beats per minute recognition, offers waveform displays and is compatible with iTunes and Apple’s iPod.

The enhanced product is available for Mac OS X and Linux. It requires Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later, a 500MHz G3 processor and 256MB RAM.

Google has added Safari 1.2.1 to the list of browsers supported by its controversial Gmail email service.

Gmail offers 1GB of storage – the equivalent of 500,000 pages of email for each user.

It also supports Mac versions of Netscape, Mozilla, and Mozilla Firefox.

Gmail, which was announced on April Fools Day, is currently in beta testing. Google, which has been accused of threatening users’ privacy because Gmail will scan emails for content, inserting advertising in personal messages, has not yet announced a start date for the service.

Intel builds all-in-one wireless radio package

Intel builds all-in-one wireless radio package

Intel researchers have figured out how to integrate all the elements needed to connect to wireless local area networks into a compact package.

Many companies have already built Wi-Fi chips that support the 802.11a/b/g standards, but those products require several other chips built onto the motherboard in order to connect to wireless networks.

Intel has now integrated components such as power amplifiers onto a single piece of silicon. It has also built connections from the amplifiers to external radio antennas on a single transceiver package, connections that used to be made with multiple pieces of silicon located outside the package, said Howard High, an Intel spokesman. A transceiver is a chip that can both transmit and receive signals.

All-in-one comms

The device currently supports 802.11a/b/g, but it should have enough bandwidth to also support the forthcoming 802.11n standard, High said. Intel believes the integrated design will help customers build cheaper and more power efficient devices, he said.

In order to build this package, Intel researchers had to solve several problems presented by an integrated design. For example, they had to figure out how to keep the power amplifier from interfering with the radio signal, High said.

By eliminating as many discrete chips as possible, Intel was able to reduce the power consumption of the package and lower the cost of building wireless networking technology into a notebook, mobile phone, or personal digital assistant, Intel researchers said in a paper outlining the accomplishment.

Two year warning

The current design is only a prototype, and additional testing and validation is needed before Intel will start producing the chip in large volumes, High said. Given that wireless communication chips also require government approval before they can be sold, Intel is probably at least two years away from selling these chips, he said.

Intel’s ultimate goal is to build a communications chip that can connect to any type of network, be it a WiFi LAN, a wide-area network based on the WiMax technology it is heavily promoting, or personal-area networks like Bluetooth or UWB (ultrawideband), High said.

By 2007, the company expects to build an integrated chip with separate radios for the various networks, and hopes to eventually build chips with “cognitive” or software-defined radios that can connect to multiple types of networks on their own.

Intel showcased the prototype at the 2005 VLSI Symposium, an annual conference highlighting advances in semiconductor research. Intel, IBM, Advanced Micro Devices, Freescale Semiconductor, Nvidia, and many other chip companies presented research at the conference.

Rumour: iPhoto gets Google Maps?

Rumour: iPhoto gets Google Maps?

Apple and Google may plan to add geo-tagging to iPhoto, Mac bloggers are speculating today.

Geo-tagging technologies let websites and services like Flickr and Google Maps mark the location in which images were taken on a map.

A Mac user claims that iPhoto already contains code that seems to link to Google Maps, and a button command to make that geo-tagged Google Map show up online.

True or false, the evidence is here.
